The cheese market has taken place on the Waagplein in Alkmaar since 1593. Teams of official guild cheese-porters carry the farmers' cheese on stretchers. Buyers then sample the cheese and negotiate a price, using a ritual system called "handjeklap", in which buyers and sellers clap each others'hands and shout prices. Once a price is agreed, the porters carry the cheese to the weighing house (Waag).
Every Friday between 10:00 and 12:30, from April 1st untill September 2nd.
Cheese has been produced in the Netherlands since prehistorical times. Holland is one of the largest cheese producing countries in Europa. Cheese is exported to more than 130 countries.
Two other attractions to visit in Alkmaar are: the Cheese Museum (located in the Waaggebouw) at the cheese market, and the Beer Museum (located 2 minutes walking from the cheese market, at Houttil 1).
