Information

The collection of the Mauritshuis is the property of the Dutch state. The oldest part of the collection consists of the paintings owned in the 18th century by stadholder Prince Willem V of Orange-Nassau (1748 - 1806)

In the last 200 years, the collection has grown from 200 to 800 paintings. The most beautiful paintings are:


Detailed information

The Mauritshuis was named after the man who had it built: Count Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen. Johan Maurits was the governor of the Dutch colony in Brazil from 1636 - 1644. He entrusted the project to the best architects of his day: Jacob van Campen and his assistant Pieter Post.
