Information

The currency in the Netherlands is the EURO, which is used in almost all countries within the European Union. Notes are in denominations of EUR 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of EUR 2, 1 and 50, 20, 10, 5 cents. (2 and 1 cents are not used anymore, because final amounts will be rounded to 5 or 0 cents).

Major creditcards and traveller cheques are widely accepted, but less popular in bars and shops. Chip and pin is more prevalent. So always carry some cash. ATMs (cashmachines) are only found at banks, TNT postoffices and at AH (Albert Heijn) supermarkets. If your cashcard carries the Maestro or Cirrus symbol, you should be able to withdraw cash.

Detailed information

Foreign currency and travellers cheques can be changed at banks, TNT postoffices or at GWK. GWK is a national organization with currency exchange offices at major railway stations and at Schiphol Airport. Hotels tend to charge high commissions.

Banking hours are: Mon 13.00 - 18.00 and Tues - Friday 09.00 - 18.00 GWK offices are open seven days a week.

Tips for good service are always appreciated but not necessary, because service charges are included in hotel rates, restaurant bills and taxi fares. It's polite to round your payment up to the nearest EURO for small bills and for larger sums to the nearest five EURO.
