Information
The official language is Lithuanian which has a number of regional dialects like Samogitian in the west. Most older generation Lithuanians also speak Russian while the younger generations speak English and Lithuanian. There are areas where Polish and German are also used by many locals. To call Lithuania, dial +370 before the phone number and use 00 to make international calls from within Lithuania. Payphones are readily available throughout Lithuania, but most can only be operated with a phonecard, available from convenience stores, post offices and news stands. Mobile telephone coverage is extensive and the three main providers, TELE2, BITE and Omnitel offer GSM 900/1800 service as well as international roaming arrangements. Lithuania has abundant internet access for visitors in both the major cities and smaller towns. Wifi access is often free in places like airports, cafes, libraries and in many hotel rooms. The postal service, Lietuvos Pastas is reliable and post offices are easily found in major centres and towns. Mail will reach most European destinations within 3 days and other continents in a week.
