Artis is the oldest zoo on mainland Europe, situated in the center of Amsterdam. Founded in 1838 by Dr. Westerman.

Except the "usual" animals, Artis has:

• a 130 years old aquarium housed in a neo-classic building, that includes a simulated Amsterdam canal too.
• a planetarium located in an enormous dome
• a botanic garden
• a zoological- and geological museum, with a large collection of fossils and minerals. There are even dinosaurs.
• an indoor rainforest
• an African savanna
