Hering is an oily fish found in the shallow temperate waters of the North Pacific and the North Atlantic oceans. Herrings are forage fish moving in vast schools, coming in spring to the shores of Europe where thay are caught, salted and smoked.
A Dutch "uitsmijter" (fried egg) is normally served on top of a slice of buttered bread, often with fried bacon, cold ham or cheese on top, for breakfast or lunch.

A kroket (croquette) is a small fried roll containing usually tasty beef or veal ragout, but can be enjoyed in more variations like fish, vegetables, shrimps or cheese.
Bitterballen are a smaller version of the kroket. It are deep-fried balls filled with meat-ragout. They are often served as a snack in bars and at receptions. They are usually dipped in mustard. It's delicious with a pint of Dutch beer or a nip of Jenever.
